Telling time in French becomes surprisingly complicated once you move beyond the basics.
There is the traditional 12-hour format with expressions like “et quart”, “et demie”, and “moins le quart”, alongside the modern 24-hour format commonly used in schedules, transportation, and everyday conversation.
French Numbers includes a dedicated time practice mode focused entirely on listening comprehension.
Users hear spoken French times and select the matching clock or format. The app supports:
- traditional 12-hour time
- modern 24-hour time
- mixed practice combining both styles
I wanted this practice to feel lightweight and repetitive in a useful way. Time comprehension improves through exposure and recognition more than explanation.
The app also supports different French dialects and adjustable speaking speed, which helps learners slowly adapt to more natural listening conditions.
One thing I increasingly believe about language learning is that small focused practice often works better than giant generalized systems. Understanding spoken time is a very specific skill, but it has an outsized effect on daily confidence once you actually live in a French-speaking environment.
French Numbers is iPhone-only for now and includes focused listening modes for time, prices, phone numbers, and number ranges. Learn more about French Numbers.
